Late Morning Sweet Treat

I have found a treasure right in my own back yard. I have been noticing a small shop on one of my routes. I'm always rushing around getting errands completed. I have been wanting to stop and visit this shop.

Well on Thursday i did just that. I put on the brakes and walked into this beautiful shop.

The shop is a Cuban Bakery. The lady running the business greeted me at the door with a smile and a "Good Morning Welcome". There was an immediate warm family feeling at the door.

When I walked in I was overwhelmed by the smells, the pastries, and the decor.

Sitting on the front counter is a shiny Espresso Machine. Then under the counter top is a long row of glass enclosed shelves holding all types of sweet treats, and Cuban sandwiches, Rolls, Merengue, cupcakes, simple pastries, and fruit filled pastries.

I placed my order and took a seat. I enjoyed a cup of Cafe Con Leche. The cafe was so delicious, smooth, a little sweet with a little bite. the froth on the top was so thick and so good.

There were so many choices on a sweet treat. I had my eye on a slice of leche cake. I then saw a a chocolate drizzled meregue. There were lots of stuffed puffed pastries. She offers savory treats also, such as a meat pie, and meat stuff puffed pastries.  I enjoyed a Guava Coconut Macaroon. The Macaroon was moist, sweet, and yummy.

I was talking with Maria. This is a family business started by her parents. I asked if all the baking was made right there. The answer was yes.

I was sitting at one of her six tables. The tables are covered in thick white table clothes. The chairs are comfortable cafe style chair. The decor of the shop was of an old town Cuban shop. The pictures hanging on the walls are of old family wedding portraits. Pictures of the the family home in Cuba.

There is wood cabinets with a rustic paint finish, pottery, and planters perched in different areas. The music playing was soft Cuban tempo beat.

There are so many more treats I will have to enjoy. The Cafe alone is reason to return. This is a treasure in my backyard.

Sexy desserts and Champagne for two

Happy Anniversary. Barry and I celebrated our wedding anniversary this summer. We have such busy schedules, working and bowling league, tournaments, and some light traveling.

We had made plans to have a quiet day,and dinner to celebrate. We had dinner at the house. Then we got dressed up and headed out for dessert. When we make these dessert dates we like to pick places where you get dressed up. We like the places where the desserts are out standing. The atmosphere is also important, we like the low lighting, music that is playing, and the energy in the room.

We both like the energy at one of the local restaurants. The hour was later then the dinner rush, so we were seated immediately. We walked in and were seated at a cozy table. The server was wonderful.

We announced that it was our anniversary and we were there for dessert. The server smiled and said we will make it special.

The server brings over the dessert tray that had eight delicious choices on it. Barry and I wanted them all, but we got it down to two. Barry had his eye on the Bourbon Bread Pudding topped with whipped cream. I picked out the delicious Carmel Pecan Cheesecake with fresh berries and whipped cream. We ordered a bottle of Prosecco.

We spent a lovely time sharing desserts, toasting our years together and enjoying the wine. In the picture you see our desserts and our glasses of bubbles. Happy Anniversary Barry.

Our son wanted to celebrate his birthday going out to dinner, then to the improv for some laughs. Dinner was delicious we ate at the famous Kobe Steak house.  We went across the parking lot to the comedy show. We decided to have dessert there. This little number caught my eye. This is a banana split sundae with lots of chocolate and whipped cream.

It seems everyone at the table felt they should partake in the consumption of this dessert. It was a hit and we had a blast that night. The company was great, the comedy was funny.

I am looking forward to more dessert dates, and will share them with all my friends. Tell me about your dessert dates. There are so many places here in the Metroplex to discover.

I think the next dessert I will  look for will be Bananas Foster.

One of my childhood memories relived.

This is one of my all time favorites. I grew up in a small New England town. My grandparents lived down the dirt road from us. We had a very tall, handsome grandfather.  Our grandfather would take us to different places like the post office, or the hardware store I remember him putting my sisters and I in his van to head out to Carvels. I think he used us as an excuse to eat the ice cream himself.

The Carvels that we visited is out on Rt 7, in an inviting white building. When we were children the
building was a walk up.

This meant that you would go up to the window and order your cone, or hand dipped shake, or ice cream sundae.

Once you placed your order the man in his clean white shirt, pants, hat would put it all together, He would hand the ice cream out the window as he made it with a tiny napkin. I must say that napkin did not take care of the task at hand.

My grandfather would sit us outside his van to eat  the cones and we would  try our best to catch every drip with our little tongues, this was the best part of summer for me. I remember he would take us back to the house and we would be sticky and a mess. Our mother would clean us up and we would just be so happy.

Then when I got older and could drive myself around Carvels would be my treat. Carvels is also one of my favorite date night places. Barry and I would visit the local Carvels and eat our favorites. My favorite is a vanilla chocolate swirl cone covered in colored sprinkles. Barry's favorite is a large vanilla cone. We would walk up get our cones and sit outside the car and eat our treats.

Barry and I made it home this past June. One of our first stops was Carvels. In the picture you can see a vanilla chocolate swirl sundae with hot fudge, colored sprinkles, whipped cream, and two cherries. Barry had his standard a large vanilla cone. We enjoyed our treats just as we did thirty years ago.

For special occasions like a birthday, or graduation, or bridal shower, or baby shower it was protocol to order one of those delicious Carvel frozen ice cream cakes.I remember the cakes were a layer of vanilla soft serve ice cream that was sprinkled with crushed chocolate cookie crumbs then topped with soft serve chocolate ice cream. Then the whole cake would be frosted with a whipped cream frosting and deep frozen until you came to pick it up. The cake would make it to the event and into your freezer. To cut the cake it would have to sit out for a little while and we would use a big knife to cut that cake. I look back now and I believe the cake was the star of every event.

I wish I could have a vanilla chocolate swirl cone right now. I guess I will be booking a flight home, first stop.....Carvels!

Late night Dessert in the Metroplex.

Late night dessert in the Metroplex.

This is the time of year I love the most. The nights are still very warm, baseball is setting up for the World Series, football on all levels is under way. There are so many games to watch. The Rangers are leading in their division. The Cowboys are having a local pre-season game.

Barry and I decided to go out to dinner and watch the Rangers, and catch the Cowboys pre- season game. We set out for our comfort place to eat some wings and have some cocktails. The games are playing on about thirty screens throughout the bar. The whole place is loud and everyone is cheering on both teams.

The evening is warm, about 97 outside. So we open the sun roof and head down the tollway to this new hot spot for some dessert. We did not know what to expect. We drove up and there is a buzz in the parking lot. The Valets have most spots roped off, we see couples arriving and leaving. The attention to detail to greet people as they walked from their vehicles to the curb was spot on. The landscaping has low lighting to enhance the travel of the sidewalks. We knew we would be in for a treat before we even hit the door.

In the middle of the dinning room there is a glass wine closet. This closet goes from floor to ceiling. There is a couple of bar set up that are very chic and inviting. The kitchen faces out into the main dining room, not something you would expect but it totally works. The restaurant was buzzing with energy. The atmosphere was sexy, and private along with clean and contemporary. People all around were happy, engaged, sophisticated yet casual.

Our hostess seats us at a high backed booth, that provides a sense of intimacy. The table is lit with a candle and the place setting is clean white plates, along with tall stemmed wine glasses. Our server comes over to greet us and offers many choices. We were blown away by the atmosphere and the service.

Barry and I enjoyed a couple of desserts. Barry had a Apple Cake with maple Carmel gelato. The presentation was wonderful, and inviting. I indulged in a flour less chocolate torte, served with a maple pecan gelato. We enjoyed a glass of St.Michelle Riesling.

There was music playing in the background. i could not help but tap to the new Katy Perry hit, along with Bruno Mars playing one of their hits.

Then if you needed more visual  entertainment there was a big screen on the side wall  showing the Cowboy game.

Feel free to share some of your favorite dessert places. I will be sure to post some more of ours.
